Subarctic
By "subarctic" are meant more the climatic conditions - it's cold, man - than the geographical definition. Under this category will fall also the subantarctic and arctic islands. The easier availability of uninhabited islands here goes hand-in-hand with uncomfortable, to downright hostile conditions. Should you establish yourself on one, few will be (probably) inclined to challenge you.
